Vomiting in Dogs

A person can baby their four-legged fur baby as they would their sick baby. Homemade foods such as boiled potatoes, well-cooked rice, boiled skinless chicken and dry toast. If your dog's vomiting doesn’t resolve in twelve hours it possibly may need fluid, therapy, antibiotics, a change in diet, antiemetics or other medication that requires a veterinarian to prescribe. Also, you should seek professional advice if your dog's vomiting is associated with loss of appetite, decreased urination, decreased thirst, bloody vomit or stools, unusual or increased lethargy, diarrhea, collapsing, and pale or white colored gums.

A canine pet may vomit just because he has eaten a portion of food or non-food item that doesn’t agree with its stomach. Some dogs are notorious for gulping down food too much too quickly. Remember vomiting can be a sign of a serious medical condition. Also, vomiting can indicate that the dog has swallowed a toxic substance. In some cases of vomiting in dogs they might require emergency care. Vomiting can also be a symptom of gastrointestinal and systemic disorders that need to be assessed by a veterinarian.

A few things that can cause a sudden onset of acute vomiting either single episodes or multiple episodes are as follows. Bacterial infection in the gastric tract, diet-related, swallowing non-food items, intestinal parasites, acute kidney failure, acute liver failure, inflammation of the gallbladder, pancreatitis, consuming toxic substances, and post-op nausea are common causes. Diet-related causes would include a change in diet, food intolerance or consumption of garbage. Non-food items would include but are not limited to toys, bones, treats, or pieces of chewies in the gastric tract that did not digest. Car sickness is another common cause of vomiting, some dogs can not tolerate traveling. If the dogs vomiting episodes are sporadically or irregular over an extended period of time this can be a result of inflammation of the stomach or intestine, severe constipation, cancer, kidney failure, diseases of the liver or any other systemic medical condition.

If your canine pet is vomiting frequently or becomes a chronic condition this can be a sign of a serious illness. These situations should be reported to the veterinarian immediately. If your dog's vomiting is a one-time episode it is most likely not of any major concern and rest and light diet should resolve this. If the dog has multiple episodes it is best to transport to him or her to the veterinarian of your choice.
